Katherine Murray-Morse

Artist of the Month (January 2022)

Katherine has been drawn to the outdoors since she was a child, with its changing atmospheric conditions, colors of the sky and ocean, molding the landscape around it and telling a story.  As a child, she spent summers on Cape Cod on the water and later, as an adult after moving to California, grew to love the majesty of the San Gabriel Mountains and the Santa Barbara coast.   She is inspired to share its beauty, its transitory yet expansive nature with subtle color and strong tonality.  Katherine’s mission is to capture the essence of that moment by sharing its beauty, lightness or depth, that “space in between” life and art.

Katherine works in oil – direct painting, landscape, still life, figurative and more recently, fine art photography, emanating from coastal walks – with a special focus on landscapes of Santa Barbara.   Prior to oil painting, Katherine was a successful banker, later a museum director and a financial planner.  She is also a board member with arts non-profits, helping the community.

She began painting just 4 years ago, also studying at Art Center College of Design (extension) and plein air with Thomas Van Stein.  She earned her B.A from Wheaton College Massachusetts and MBA from Northeastern Univ. Boston.    Katherine has juried into various exhibits in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, belongs to several art associations and last year, had two dedicated shows in Los Angeles featuring her work.
