Liz Poulin Alvarez, Artist of the month for August 2025, features a collection of new and recent artworks of dogs in the landscape.

Dog Tales is a collection of drawings and paintings celebrating dogs in the landscape. Whether it’s taking your beloved pet to the beach or a stroll around the neighborhood, this collection spans many decades and is a tribute to dogs that have passed away and to dogs currently in her life. Movement and color epitomize what our canine companions bring to our world which enhances the experience of being in a place.

Liz enjoys bringing her dog along while painting on location. Using the alla prima technique, paintings are mostly completed in one sitting. A high-key color palette, emphasizes distinct shadow shapes. Loose brush strokes evoke the dog’s energy in its surrounding environment. Each artwork tells a tale, where the dog (or dogs) are the star of the setting.

Liz Poulin Alvarez is a Maine native. After returning from living abroad in New Zealand, she’s made the Central California Coast her home since 2014.

She received her art education globally; a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design, a Teacher credential from UCSB and an M.F.A. from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in Auckland, New Zealand.

Liz balances her artmaking with teaching art full-time at a local high school. She is a member of The Santa Barbara Art Association, The Lompoc Valley Art Association, The California Art Club and S.C.A.P.E. (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment.) A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local animal shelter.
