Marcia Rickard

July 2024

Marcia Rickard is a hybrid—student/professor/artist/art historian. With a PhD in medieval art, she taught art history for 34 years at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, while continuing to take studio courses herself. Now living in Santa Barbara, she focuses on the artist part of the equation, but her art history background is never far behind.

“My work in Indiana featured painting and fiber arts, but since coming to Santa Barbara, I have embraced printmaking and collage. These works show the impact of moving to a beautiful new environment which makes me aware that I am on the edge of the continent, one where colors are sharply etched by an intensity of light very different from northern Indiana. I am drawn to the emphatic line of the Pacific Ocean’s horizon, and allow myself to imaginatively sink into its underwater depths”.
